Stuff I dyed

This is just a quick gallery of most of what I dyed up at my workshop with Vicki Jensen at NEWS.  I'm hoping to start spinning the BFL this evening. It's meant to be the weft to go along with the corresponding 2-ply wool I dyed to match. I'm really curious to see how the color plays out once I start weaving with all of this.

Ok. I LOVE BFL. Its my favorite wool to spin. Im not the best knitter so have decided it is time to weave with my handspun. Have you ever woven with single ply? I am about to try to use singles for both warp and weft. I think it is pretty twisted and wont break under tension...but I'll have to wait and see. Any advice on weaving with handspun??

My experience weaving with handspun has been great. I love the control it gives me over the outcome of the fabric. It's easy to use as a weft yarn, though I would recommend caution using it as a warp yarn. Many weavers would tell you flat out not to use it in the warp, but if it works for you, why not? I tend to use a rigid heddle loom if I am going to use single ply in the warp. It's a lot gentler on the yarn than a floor loom might be, and it's easier to see all of your exposed threads to troubleshoot any areas of concern. Either way, if you are using a single ply handspun as a warp yarn, be very careful of your tension. If your goal in using single ply in the warp is to preserve the color, you might try a Navajo ply. This would give you the strength of a plied yarn while minimizing color variances.
